ஜார்க்கண்ட் மாநிலம் ராஞ்சியில் கடந்த 1981 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜூலை 7 ஆம் தேதி பிறந்தவர் தான் மகேந்திர சிங் தோனி. தான் ஒரு கிரிக்கெட் வீரராக வந்து இந்திய அணியில் இடம் பெற்று பல சாதனைகளை புரிவேன் என்று தோனி அப்போது நினைத்து கூட பார்த்திருக்க மாட்டார்.

ஆரம்பத்தில் கால்பந்து விளையாடி வந்த தோனி, கிரிக்கெட் மீது கவனத்தை செலுத்தி முதலில் விக்கெட் கீப்பராக பயிற்சியை மேற்கொண்டார். அதன் பிறகு பேட்டிங்கிலும் பயிற்சியை தொடங்கி உள்ளூர் போட்டிகளில் அதுவும் பீகார் அணிக்காக விளையாடினார். அதன் பிறகு ஜார்க்கண்ட் அணிக்காக விளையாடினார்.
கங்குலி, சச்சின் யாரும் படைக்காத சாதனையை படைத்த தோனி!
அப்போது தான் கடந்த 2004 ஆம் ஆண்டு இந்திய அணியில் இடம் பிடித்தார். முதலில் வங்கதேச அணிக்கு எதிரான ஒரு நாள் போட்டியின் மூலமாக டிசம்பர் 23, 2004 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஒரு நாள் தொடரில் அறிமுகமானார். இந்தப் போட்டியில் தோனி ஒரு பந்து தான் விளையாடினார். அந்தப் பந்திலேயும் ரன் அவுட் செய்யப்பட்டார். எனினும், அந்தப் போட்டியில் இந்தியா 11 ரன்கள் வித்தியாசத்தில் வெற்றி பெற்றது. அன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் சவுரவ் கங்கிலி தான் கேப்டனாக இருந்தார்.

இதே போன்று டிசம்பர் 2, 2005 ஆம் ஆண்டு இலங்கை அணிக்கு எதிரான டெஸ்ட் போட்டியின் மூலமாக டெஸ்ட் தொடரில் அறிமுகமானார். இந்தப் போட்டியில் தோனி 53 பந்துகளில் 6 பவுண்டரி உள்பட 30 ரன்கள் சேர்த்து ஆட்டமிழந்தார். எனினும், இந்தப் போட்டி மோசமான வானிலை காரணமாக டிராவில் முடிந்தது. முதல் 3 நாட்கள் போட்டி மழை, மோசமான வானிலை காரணமாக நடக்கவில்லை. கடைசி 2 நாட்கள் மட்டுமே போட்டி நடந்தது.
இதையடுத்து 2006 ஆம் ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் 1 ஆம் தேதி தென் ஆப்பிரிக்காவுக்கு எதிரான டி20 போட்டியின் மூலமாக டி20 தொடரில் அறிமுகமானார். இந்தப் போட்டியிலும் தோனி 2 பந்துகளில் ரன் ஏதும் எடுக்காமல் ஆட்டமிழந்தார். இதில் இந்தியா 6 விக்கெட் வித்தியாசத்தில் வெற்றி பெற்றது. தோனி தனது கடைசி டி20 போட்டியில் 23 பந்துகளில் 3 பவுண்டரி, 3 சிக்ஸர்கள் உள்பட 40 ரன்கள் சேர்த்து ஆட்டமிழந்தார்.
